Together we are building education, mentoring and clinical supervision for clinicians working in feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing across the lifespan.
Two Practices, One Purpose.
Eat Drink Swallow Safe was founded by Dr Julie Cichero, co-creator of the IDDSI Framework now used in dysphagia care and management worldwide.
Queensland Lactation & Feeding Specialists is a dedicated paediatric feeding, swallowing, growth and nutrition practice. Between us we cover feeding and swallowing across the lifespan, from infancy to older age.

Paediatric Education & Clinical Mentoring for Speech Pathologists, Dietitians and other health professionals working with infants, children and young people.
Delivered by the QLFS team - a dedicated paediatric feeding, swallowing, growth and nutrition practice.
Our team has taught and supported scores of clinicians, and each mentor brings over 20 years’ experience with complex cases across major hospitals, community, education and private practice settings.
The QLFS team have presented and taught for conferences & organisations such as Speech Pathology Australia, Australian Breastfeeding Association, Australian Paediatric Palliative Care, Queensland Health & Children’s Health Queensland, Australian IDDSI Conference, and Quality of Care Collaborative Australia.
Our research and complex case work has been presented at international conferences such as American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies.
Dr Julie Cichero is a speech pathologist and researcher with more than 30 years' clinical and research experience in eating, drinking and swallowing. As the Co-Founder of IDDSI Global, Julie co-led development of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation framework now used in more than 50 countries around the world, and translated into 30+ languages.
Julie holds a PhD in the assessment of swallow-respiratory coordination. She is an Honorary Associate Professor at The University of Queensland School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Research, where her research and teaching focus on medication swallowing issues in healthy people, as well as those with dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing problems).
She is a strong advocate of interdisciplinary education, conducting research and working with the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical since 2008.
Julie's work spans clinical practice, academic research, professional standards development, government advisory work and Coronial subject-matter expertise. She has presented at international conferences across Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, and has consulted to professional societies, government organisations, academia, Coroners, boards, food and beverage manufacturers as a key opinion leader, aged care providers, and hospitals.
She is the co-author of two foundational dysphagia texts: Dysphagia: Foundation, Theory and Practice (Wiley) and The Essential Dysphagia Handbook, the latter co-authored with Karrie Jardine. Julie has also authored 12 book chapters and 85 peer reviewed academic publications.

Enhance your assessment and case management skills with this transdisciplinary workshop for Speech Pathologists and Dietitians. Designed for clinicians working with infants in inpatient or outpatient / community settings, this small-group two-day program will broaden your knowledge and stretch your problem solving skills.
Join Karrie Jardine (Speech Pathologist & International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) and Brigitte Corcoran (Accredited Practicing Dietitian) to learn from their combined 50 years’ experience in managing infants with challenges with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, solids, growth and allergies.

What to expect:
We’ll assume you have the basics covered, and don’t need another course on how to assess if a baby is feeding & growing safely and adequately. Instead, we’ll be tackling the trickier parts of the job.
Sorting the red flags from the red herrings
Managing multiple issues and competing priorities
Understanding other disciplines’ approach to a case
Working alongside families who have different goals and ideas to us
Supporting breastfeeding without unintentionally undermining it
Knowing the difference between your scope and your comfort zone
Reviewing interventions and outcomes when things aren’t working
We understand that clinicians usually don’t learn from (or enjoy) hours of dry theory and content.
Places are limited, allowing us to focus on real and complex cases, tailor the session to the clinicians in the room, compare approaches to management, review the evidence, and answer questions about your caseload.
The cases will cover typically developing infants, and those with medical complexity, and will include:
Breastfeeding & lactation
Bottle feeding
Supplemental feeding, formula feeding
Food in the first year
Tube feeding & tube weaning
Growth challenges
Allergy and feed intolerance in infancy
About Karrie Jardine
Paediatric Speech Pathologist and IBCLC
Karrie Jardine has worked in paediatric feeding and swallowing for more than 20 years. She is a dual qualified Speech Pathologist and IBCLC, and since 2008 has held advanced and senior clinical roles in Queensland’s major children’s hospitals. She is founder and director of Queensland Lactation & Feeding Specialists, and Paediatric Lead at Eat Drink Swallow Safe.
Her work focuses on complex infant feeding cases, including congenital heart disease, complex airway and tracheostomy, aerodigestive and gastrointestinal conditions, rare and life-limiting illness, and tube weaning. She has worked across neonatal units, intensive care, and medical and surgical wards, and has developed tube-weaning and post-cardiac-surgery feeding approaches. Karrie has a particular interest in supporting breastfeeding for infants with medical and surgical complexity.
Karrie has taught and mentored countless clinicians. She was invited by the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at a major US paediatric hospital to spend two weeks reviewing clinical practice, mentoring staff, and advising on the development of feeding services. Her teaching has included advanced neonatal and infant palliative care, and ethical decision-making in feeding. Karrie co-authored The Essential Dysphagia Handbook (2013) with Dr Julie Cichero, and has presented her work at conferences in Australia and overseas, including American Association of Thoracic Surgery, World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies, and the Australian Paediatric Palliative Care Conference.
About Brigitte Corcoran
Paediatric Dietitian (APD)
Brigitte is a Paediatric Dietitian with 30 years’ experience in infant feeding, growth concerns, enteral feeding, and immediate and delayed food allergies. She has worked in major tertiary hospitals, regional hospitals and health centres in Queensland and overseas. Brigitte is a sought-after educator and has been trusted to present for organisations such as Australian Breastfeeding Association, Queensland Health and Dietitian Connection.
Brigitte’s work focuses on infant allergy and feed intolerance, growth faltering, nutrition and growth for complex medical & surgical conditions (respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiac, neuromuscular), tube feeding and tube weaning. She has a particular interest in supporting breastfeeding through maternal and infant-related challenges.
She will inspire you to provide practical, evidence-based nutrition support and a professional, family-centred approach.
